Devils Tower National Monument is situated just west of Rapid City/Mount Rushmore in Wyoming, visit the NPS page for full details on this unique structure. It was formed by magma being pushed up into sedimentary rock, which cooled, and formed hard igneous rock. Overtime the surrounding sedimentary rock eroded away leaving this tower!
Also, its name was a mistranslation of the Native American, specifically Lakota, word for Bear or Bear's Lodge. Apparently European explorers thought the Lakota called it "Bad God's Tower" which then became "Devil's Tower" and then standard naming conventions dropped the apostrophe!
This was just a quick stop on our way to Utah on our Mighty Five Road trip that we did later in the day and there was a thunder storm rolling in. We definitely did not want to get caught in that!
